But for pure spectacle, there is probably nothing quite like the Palio di Siena. Three laps around a medieval piazza. Bareback riders. No rules worth mentioning. Bribery not just permitted but celebrated. And a city that has been doing this, with fierce and undiminished passion, since the mid-1600s.

My late wife and I watched the Palio from the edge of the Piazza del Campo on a sweltering August afternoon. We had read about it beforehand. We thought we understood what we were walking into. We did not. Nothing prepares you for it. This is our attempt to prepare you.

What Is the Palio di Siena?

The Palio di Siena is a bareback horse race held twice a year in Siena, Tuscany — on July 2 and August 16. Ten horses represent ten of Siena’s seventeen historic districts, called contrade. The race circles the Piazza del Campo — the city’s extraordinary shell-shaped main square — three times. It lasts between sixty and ninety seconds.

That’s it. Sixty to ninety seconds of racing. And yet the entire city has been preparing for months.

A Brief History of Siena and the Palio

Siena is one of many walled cities perched in the Tuscan hills south of Florence. In the Middle Ages it was a major commercial and financial center — prosperous, powerful, and fiercely independent. Then the Black Plague of the 1340s arrived and decimated both the population and the city’s regional importance. Siena never fully recovered its former stature. What it recovered instead was something arguably more interesting: an intensely local identity, organized around the neighborhood, the contrada, and the race.

The Palio in its modern form dates to 1656, though earlier versions of the race predate that by centuries. It has been run — with only rare interruptions for war — ever since.

The Contrade: The Heart of Everything

To understand the Palio, you must first understand the contrade (singular: contrada). A contrada is something like a ward or neighborhood district — except that in Siena, it is far more important than that description suggests.

Each contrada has its own political jurisdiction, its own officials, its own constitution. In religious life, each has its own church and its own baptismal records. A Sienese citizen is not simply from Siena. They are from the Snail, or the Giraffe, or the Eagle, or the Dragon — and that identity shapes their life from birth.

There are currently seventeen contrade. Each has a name (typically an animal, real or mythological), a coat of arms, a distinctive banner, and a set of alliances and rivalries with its neighbors that have accumulated over centuries. Some of those rivalries are friendly. Some are not.

Because only ten of the seventeen contrade can race on any given day — the track simply cannot accommodate more — seven spots go automatically to the contrade that did not race at the same Palio the previous year. The remaining three are drawn by lot. This system ensures that every contrada races at least once per year, and it guarantees that the selection itself becomes a dramatic event.

The Horses, the Jockeys, and the Rules (Such As They Are)

The ten participating horses are selected through a rigorous trial process. Thoroughbreds are not permitted — the horses must be of mixed breed, chosen not for raw speed but for their ability to handle a cramped starting gate, deafening crowd noise, and the sharp, unforgiving turns of the Piazza del Campo. From an initial pool of roughly thirty horses, trials reduce the field to ten. After that, the horses are assigned to their contrade by draw. A captain may spend weeks negotiating for a particular horse and then discover on race day that he has been assigned a different one entirely.

The jockeys are a different matter. They are professionals — hired guns, essentially — contracted by each contrada. Their loyalty to their employer, however, is not guaranteed. And this brings us to the feature of the Palio that most surprises first-time visitors: there are effectively no rules.

Bribery is not merely tolerated at the Palio. It is celebrated. Jockeys negotiate with other jockeys — sometimes in full public view — before and during the race. Alliances shift. A contrada may instruct its jockey to obstruct a rival rather than win. It is considered entirely acceptable sport to deliberately lose a Palio if doing so prevents a despised neighbor from winning. The winner is the first horse to cross the finish line — with or without its rider. A riderless horse can and does win.

If you are considering a wager, you now have the relevant context.

The Race

Three laps around the Piazza del Campo. Sixty to ninety seconds. The jockeys ride bareback, and falls are not uncommon — the turns at the corners of the piazza are sharp enough to unseat even experienced riders. The crowd packed into the center of the square surges with each lap. The noise is extraordinary.

The winner receives no prize money. There is no second place and no third place — or rather, the second and third finishers are simply the two worst losers. The winning contrada receives one thing: the drappellone, a vertical silk banner painted by an artist commissioned specifically for that Palio. It is kept in the museum of the winning contrada and treated as a sacred object.

Winning is, in the words painted above the starting line and borrowed from Vince Lombardi, the only thing.

The Night Before: Contrada Dinners

On the evening before each race — the night of July 1 or August 15 — all seventeen contrade hold their celebratory pre-race dinner simultaneously. Streets are strung with lanterns and torches. Tables, sometimes fifty feet long, are laid with the contrada’s colors, symbols, and banners in the neighborhood’s own piazza. The food and wine are plentiful. The atmosphere is unlike anything else in Italy.

Visitors can attend one of these dinners. It requires planning — seats are limited and fill well in advance — but it is, in our experience, the single most immersive way to experience the Palio. You are not watching the contrada celebrate. You are, for an evening, part of it.

Planning Your Visit to the Palio di Siena

The Palio is free to watch from the center of the Piazza del Campo — but free comes with conditions. The square fills hours before the race. You will stand. You will be pressed on all sides. You will not be able to leave once the crowd has formed. In August, in Tuscany, this is hot work.

Ticketed grandstand seating is available around the perimeter of the piazza and offers a far more comfortable viewing experience — critical sight lines to the full track, room to breathe, and in some cases access to a seat for the procession as well as the race. These tickets sell out months in advance. Book early.

Recommended: A guided Palio experience takes the logistical pressure off and adds significant context to what you are seeing. Browse guided Palio di Siena tours on Viator →

Siena itself is small enough to walk entirely. They are fiercely loyal to their contrada. You are a guest in their house and should conduct yourself accordingly.

Feelings run especially high during the Palio. Events are generally festive, but some rivalries are so intense that a mistaken word or gesture can produce unforeseen consequences. Our suggestion: keep your emotions on an even keel. Relax and enjoy the festivities. Try not to get overly excited or disappointed. You are witnessing something that the people around you have cared about since birth. Treat it with the respect that deserves.

Travel Trivia

The drappellone — the silk banner awarded to the winning contrada — is painted by a different artist for every single Palio. No two are alike. Over the centuries, the banners have become significant works of art, and the museums of the individual contrade hold extraordinary collections of them. If you have time before race day, several contrade museums are open to visitors.

Our Website Has More

We will continue to update our Siena guides with practical details: recommended contrada dinner contacts, grandstand ticket sources, the best spots in the piazza for a riderless-horse scenario, and a few photographs that did not make the cut for this piece.
